Saturday 16th-Sunday 17th
Day one/two:
At around half past 12 on the morning of the sixteenth; the
coach, containing the team, set off to Heathrow airport. We arrived with plenty
of time and passed through customs with relative ease, leaving us with time to
kill in the duty-free section. Practically spoilt for choice, we split up. Some
went across to the shopping section whilst James, Adam and Matt went off to
explore the restaurant of Britons favourite chef... Gordon Ramsey! Unfortunately
the man himself was not there.
In the early hours of the seventeenth, our plane
descended onto the sunny plains of sub-Saharan Africa. We all pushed to get a glimpse
of the land we would soon be on and we all knew that this trip would change our
lives. Again we moved quickly through border control and resumed our momentous
journey to the Hands at Work base.
Along the way, we stopped at a motorway service station
which, to our great surprise and delight, contained a private safari area
containing gazelles, emus, ostrich and even white rhinos!!!
Much later, our journey drew to an end as the
welcoming gates loomed before us. Our twenty-seven hour journey was complete! We
then met our hosts Kristie and Daytona, who told us about the way that things
are run here and the general daily routine. We then had a quick and easy dinner
of pizza and salad, after which we packed up all of the school supplies (kindly
donated by many people for the benefit of the children) and began to prepare
for our first community visit tomorrow!!! J
