Walking to home based care visits with volunteers care workers from Hands at Work |
I met two people Rose* and Philip*. They look after 3
children one of which was neglected, his name was Thankful*. His father had
sadly passed away and left Thankful with his mum. His mum couldn’t cope with
the stress and therefore neglected Thankful.
Thankful* is now in the caring hands of his grandparents and
his mother occasionally visits Thankful. Philip makes bricks and is able to
make himself a extension on to their house however they have ran out of money
to finish it off. (Matt)
Today I met a Gogo Elizabeth* (Gogo is the affectionate name given to a grandmother who cares for children) and her daughter Sympathy* along
with Gogo’s grand-daughter. Elizabeth’s* grand-daughter is the youngest of 5,
her other 4 siblings where taken away by the father and upon the mothers wishes
the youngest was sent to her Gogo when she eventually died. The death of her
daughter seem to hit Gogo very hard and she seemed visibly heart broken. Along
with this her other 3 sons had gone to Johannesburg to find a good job and had
left Gogo to care for the children which she said she’d was a massive
struggle. (Georgia)
After the home visits we returned back to the care point to have
a final time with the kids, we brought out
some craft activities, bracelet making, hand printing and colouring which was a
great way to bond with them. The care workers even enjoyed making the bracelets
and the colouring. The hand paintings of the children and of all of us on the team
will be hung up inside the care point.
