Wednesday 19 February 2020 - Somerset

Today, we travelled to the Somerset community. After a long and bumpy bus journey, we carried the vegetables and food bought from the supermarket to the hut where all cooking takes place. At this specific community, there was a brick building to stand in for shade, this is where the team and the careworkers sat and found out more about each other. The careworkers sang beautifully to us and shared a prayer until we split into four groups. These four groups were together for home visits. The second home visit that my group went on was a family of seven. The dad of this family was called Peter* and he had unfortunately lost a leg. Despite his position, he still took complete care for the rest of his family. One of his five children was ill, and his family did everything to try and help. However, in their desperation, they were giving him 19 year-old medication for adults. The careworker with us told the parents that this medication was not the correct ones for their child –but in fact was making him worse- and advised them to go back to the clinic to receive the right medication to help the child. We then prayed for their young son to recover fully from his illness and soon be able to get back to school. After saying our goodbyes, we then returned back to care point. Despite the hot weather, we played and laughed with the children and shared a meal with them.

Today, I met a young man called Arthur* who lived at home with his gogo and his siblings. He was telling us about his goals and ambitions in school. He told us that he wanted to become a maths teacher when he graduates from school. He also shared with us that he enjoyed maths. Arthur was in his early twenties but in grade 9 at school the same grade I would be in. He seemed a nice lad, but shy as there was a significant language barrier between us both. I asked him a few school related things such as his favourite subjects and whether he enjoyed being in school. After that we spent some time playing with the children at the care point before we ate a good meal of rice, chicken and beetroot.
