A day in the community of Mafambisa

Thursday 21st February
Today we visited another community that Hands at Work are partnered with called Mafambisa. Mafambisa is the community that Wolgarston directly support. Mafambisa care point was first set up in 2017 so it is quite a new care point, therefore there were quite a lot of differences compared to the community of Share that we visited just a few days ago. With Share, I assumed that the care point would be a lot smaller, however when we arrived it was much bigger than I first expected. On the other hand, Mafambisa was the opposite. Originally, I thought Mafambisa would be quite a large care point, whereas when we arrived it was a lot smaller. When I looked at a small part of a picture of Mafambisa before we arrived in South Africa I tried to create an image in my mind of what I thought it would look like, however when we arrived it was nothing like what I’d imagined prior to the trip.

The new cooking shelter - taking shape
The new cooking shelter that we at Wolgarston had helped raise money for has started to look more permanent and is looking as though it will really help the care workers in making the children’s meals everyday.

Two care volunteers cook in the existing cooking shelter
When we arrived today at Mafambisa, we were all set to work immediately with jobs like helping the care workers prepare food hours in advance to actually having the meal and also helping cut the long grass next to the care point with a machete. Soon after We all visited the pastor of the church that is used for the care point, who welcomed us into his home and we had the chance to see the food that the care point gets all from just a little storage room in the back of the pastor’s home.

Today's lunch... nearly ready!
The care point is based in a church and around the church there is a well used slide, a grass area with some tyres that is covered by the shade of two very big trees that the children of Mafambisa loved to climb (the shade was greatly appreciated by the team) and there was a wooden shelter next to the new permanent shelter being built, where the two care workers who were there today, Leratto* and Busi*, were cooking up the pap, beans and carrots & cabbage. The team always look forward to the pap even though today`s was very hot and difficult to pick up with just our fingers!

Today`s activities consisted of getting to know the care workers then later on as the children gradually arrived all the team began to play with the them. Piggy backs, football and the nerf throwing toy were the most popular activities for the children. They also really enjoyed borrowing everyone`s hats!

*Not their real names.
